21 Day Fast Day 10

Here we are about to be nearly halfway through our fast. God bless you to make it all the way through. All we need to do sometimes is tell ourselves we can do it. Make faith declarations, “I’m going to make it through.” “I’m not going to quit!” “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” We declare God’s Word over ourselves and believe that he honors his word. When he says, “I will not forsake you,” you can count on it! There is something very powerful in the spoken word.

Take the lesson from the twins, Jacob and Esau. Their father, Isaac, was hungry one day and bribed his son Esau to go catch some game and prepare him his favorite meal. He told Esau that when he did he was going to speak over him the Blessing. This was a big deal that brought with it the right of being the head of the household and leader of the clan. As Esau embarked on his journey, his mother, Rebecca, overheard the conversation but wanted Jacob to be the heir. So she told Jacob to prepare the meal with their own livestock and pretend to be Esau. Isaac was old and could not see very well and ended up being deceived by Jacob and pronounced the blessing over him. (You can read the story in Genesis 27.) When Esau came in and realized what had happened he was beside himself and asked his father to bless him too. Isaac told him it couldn’t be reversed. What he said had to remain because he spoke it. This certainly can seem so unfair, but the point is “the power of the tongue.”  It set in place the course of history in this Biblical narrative.

I believe the same thing holds true for us. The words we speak will chart our course and touch the lives of those around us, especially those in our own households. (Oh how I wish I could take back many things that I’ve said in the heat of the moment! I can still feel the wounds I’ve received from others that just said a hurtful off the cuff word.)

Proverbs 18:21 - "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit."

Proverbs 12:18 - "The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing."

Matthew 12:36-37 - "But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."

Ephesians 4:29 - "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."

Psalm 19:14 “ Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.”

Let’s make the power of our words count. Let’s touch the lives of the people around us with blessings. Let’s believe that our words matter and we can affect our environment with what we say.

Love and blessings,

Pastor Ray
